Background of the study:
Poultry farming is a vital agricultural activity in Jalingo LGA; however, farmers often face challenges in managing flock health, feeding schedules, and environmental conditions. Traditional monitoring practices are labor-intensive and prone to human error, resulting in suboptimal poultry production and increased operational costs. An IoT-based smart poultry farm monitoring system integrates sensors, data analytics, and wireless connectivity to provide real-time oversight of critical parameters such as temperature, humidity, feed levels, and bird activity. This technology enables continuous monitoring of the poultry house environment, ensuring that conditions remain within optimal ranges for bird health and productivity (Umar, 2023). Data from the system is transmitted to centralized dashboards, where predictive analytics help forecast potential issues such as disease outbreaks or equipment malfunctions. This proactive approach allows farmers to intervene early, thereby reducing mortality rates and improving overall productivity (Adamu, 2024). Moreover, the system facilitates automated adjustments in environmental controls, such as ventilation and heating, to maintain ideal conditions. By minimizing manual interventions, the system also reduces labor costs and enhances operational efficiency. The adoption of IoT technologies in poultry farming is aligned with global trends in precision agriculture, offering sustainable solutions to enhance food production and resource management (Emeka, 2025). Overall, the integration of a smart monitoring system in poultry farms promises to improve yield, reduce losses, and foster a more efficient and competitive poultry industry in the region.

Statement of the problem:
Poultry farmers in Jalingo LGA face significant challenges due to the limitations of traditional, manual monitoring systems that are unable to provide real-time data on environmental conditions and bird health. Inadequate monitoring leads to delayed detection of issues such as temperature fluctuations, inadequate ventilation, and irregular feeding patterns, which can cause stress and increased mortality among poultry (Umar, 2023). The absence of an automated system results in reactive rather than proactive management, leading to reduced productivity and higher operational costs. Farmers often rely on periodic checks, which fail to capture rapid changes in the poultry house environment, thereby increasing the risk of disease outbreaks and equipment failures. Moreover, manual monitoring is labor-intensive and susceptible to human error, compounding inefficiencies in resource use and flock management (Adamu, 2024). Financial and technical constraints further limit the adoption of modern monitoring solutions, leaving many farms vulnerable to preventable losses. Without an IoT-based system to continuously track and optimize environmental conditions, the overall efficiency and profitability of poultry operations in the region remain compromised (Emeka, 2025). Addressing these challenges is critical to enhancing production, reducing waste, and improving the sustainability of poultry farming in Jalingo LGA.

Objectives of the study:

  • To design an IoT-based system for continuous monitoring of environmental and operational parameters in poultry farms.

  • To assess the system’s effectiveness in improving flock health and production efficiency.

  • To recommend strategies for integrating IoT technology into existing poultry management practices.

Research questions:

  • How effective is the IoT-based system in providing real-time data on poultry farm conditions?

  • What improvements in productivity and flock health can be observed following system implementation?

  • How can the system be optimized for broader adoption in the poultry farming sector?

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it addresses the critical need for real-time monitoring in poultry farming through IoT technology. By enabling proactive management and timely interventions, the system can enhance flock health, increase productivity, and reduce operational costs, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and competitive poultry industry in Jalingo LGA.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the optimization and evaluation of IoT-based smart poultry farm monitoring systems in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State. It does not extend to other forms of livestock or different regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that exchange real-time data.

  • Poultry Farm Monitoring: The process of continuously tracking environmental and operational parameters in poultry production.

  • Smart Monitoring System: A technology-driven system that automates data collection and analysis for improved management.
